Municipal engineering covers the various infrastructure projects under a municipality’s responsibility, including their planning, implementation, maintenance, operational monitoring, ownership steering, and regulatory administration. Our membership consists of more than 700 municipal engineering professionals as well as about twenty organizational members. The diversity of the members’ tasks is well illustrated by the association’s emblem, which can be seen equally as paving stones or as a city plan.
The association’s most visible activities are the annual Municipal Engineering Days, the Municipal Engineering Forum, the diverse Kuntatekniikka magazine, and various publications. Every second year, the Municipal Engineering Days are accompanied by the field’s largest trade fair, the Community Infrastructure Exhibition, which also brings together negotiations and events across different sectors for an entire week. Our CEO, Ville Alatyppö is the President of IFME 2024-2027.
We work in close cooperation with our sister organizations in the Nordic countries and are an active association in the International Federation of Municipal Engineering (IFME, www.ifmeworld.org). In addition, we maintain strong connections with both domestic and international stakeholders in the field.
Association was founded in 1926 under the name Suomen Kunnallisteknillinen yhdistys (SKTY) (The Finnish Association of Municipal Engineering, FAME). The Kuntatekniikka -magazine was first published in 1946 under the name Kunnallistekniikka. In the mid-1990s, both the association and the magazine adopted their current names.
